Shillong experiences heavy rainfall for a significant part of the year, often making open terrace spaces difficult to use consistently. For Hotel Poloisuk, the terrace offered a beautiful panoramic view of the city, but the area remained underutilised for restaurant dining due to frequent rain and changing weather conditions. The objective of this project was to create a flexible enclosure that would allow guests to enjoy the terrace throughout the year while preserving the openness and scenic experience of the space.
All Weather Dining with an Uninterrupted View
One of the primary challenges in this project was to provide reliable protection from Shillong’s prolonged rainfall without permanently enclosing the terrace. Shillong receives substantial rainfall annually, with monsoon and wet weather conditions extending across several months of the year. A patio retractable roof enclosure was selected as the ideal solution because it allows the restaurant space to remain protected during rain while still maintaining visibility, natural light, and openness when weather conditions are favourable.

The manually operated retractable enclosure provides flexibility to adapt the terrace based on weather and operational requirements. Guests can comfortably enjoy the city view even during rainy conditions, significantly improving the usability and functionality of the dining area. The enclosure integrates seamlessly with the terrace structure and enhances the overall guest experience by transforming an underutilised outdoor space into a practical, all season restaurant seating area.
