Hospitality spaces in Shillong face a unique challenge: the city receives some of the highest rainfall in India, with annual rainfall often exceeding 2,000 mm and prolonged wet weather affecting outdoor operations for several months of the year. This large banquet and event space at a well-known restaurant in Shillong was difficult to use consistently during the monsoon season. The objective was to create a weather-protected venue that could host events throughout the year while preserving natural light, openness, and the premium ambience expected from a modern hospitality destination.
Transforming a Seasonal Space into a Year Round Event Venue
The scale of this project required a robust and carefully engineered retractable roofing system capable of covering a large banquet area while maintaining structural efficiency and smooth operation. Clear transparent polycarbonate panels were selected to maximise natural daylight and preserve the bright, open character of the venue even when the roof is closed. This was especially important for daytime events, where the space needed to feel connected to the outdoors rather than enclosed by a conventional roof.

A key highlight of this installation is the integration of built-in lighting within the retractable roof structure, creating an elegant ambience for evening functions, celebrations, and banquet events. The motorised system allows the venue to remain open during favourable weather and quickly transform into a fully protected event space during rain. By combining weather protection, natural light, large-span engineering, and integrated illumination, the project demonstrates how retractable roofing can significantly enhance the functionality and commercial value of hospitality and event venues in high-rainfall regions.
