Penthouse terraces offer expansive views and abundant natural light, making them one of the most desirable spaces in a home. However, exposure to rain, harsh sunlight, and changing weather conditions often limits their year round usability. This featured residential penthouse project demonstrates how a polycarbonate retractable roof can transform an open terrace into a flexible outdoor living space while preserving the panoramic views and open air experience that make penthouses so unique.
Custom Engineering for a Challenging Penthouse Layout
Unlike conventional terrace installations, this penthouse presented a unique structural challenge. Two sides of the terrace were enclosed by existing walls, while the remaining two sides were completely open. One wall provided sufficient support for installing the retractable roof track, but the opposite side required additional structural support. A dedicated steel framework was therefore incorporated into the design, creating the necessary support for the second track while maintaining stability, alignment, and smooth operation of the retractable roofing system.

The polycarbonate retractable roof allows the terrace to remain open whenever weather conditions are favourable and provides dependable protection during rain or intense sunlight. After completion of the roof installation, sliding glass windows were incorporated along the two open sides, creating a bright and weather protected outdoor living area without obstructing the surrounding views. The lightweight yet durable polycarbonate panels allow natural daylight to enter the space while delivering reliable all weather performance, demonstrating how customised engineering can adapt retractable roofing systems to challenging architectural conditions.
