Farmhouses are designed to create a close connection with nature, and open courtyards play an important role in bringing natural light and fresh air into living spaces. However, exposure to rain and intense sunlight can reduce their comfort and usability throughout the year. This featured farmhouse project in Anaikatti, near Coimbatore, demonstrates how a customised polycarbonate retractable roof can preserve the openness of a courtyard while providing reliable protection from changing weather conditions.
Custom Engineering for a Unique Courtyard Layout
Every project presents its own architectural challenges, and this farmhouse courtyard was no exception. The courtyard was located adjacent to a traditional sloping Mangalore tile roof. To prevent rainwater from flowing into the courtyard opening, a retaining wall was incorporated along one edge of the cut out. This created a unique structural condition where the retractable roof system was engineered with wall mounted tracks on one side and ground supported tracks on the opposite side. The solution was carefully adapted to suit the site’s architecture while maintaining smooth and reliable roof operation.

Tinted polycarbonate panels were selected to provide weather protection while reducing the amount of direct sunlight entering the courtyard when the roof is closed. The retractable system allows the space to remain completely open whenever natural ventilation and sky views are desired, while offering dependable shelter during rain or harsh sunlight. This project demonstrates how every retractable roofing solution can be customised around the site’s architectural conditions, ensuring that functionality, aesthetics, and long term performance work together seamlessly.
