A thoughtfully designed central courtyard can elevate the aesthetics of a home, but exposure to rain and harsh sunlight often limits its usability. In this residential project, the client wanted to retain the openness of the space while ensuring protection from changing weather conditions. The objective was to create a solution that would maintain natural light and ventilation, without compromising on comfort or design.
Balancing Protection with Openness
The primary challenge in this project was to provide effective weather protection while preserving the visual and spatial openness of the courtyard. Traditional fixed roofing options would have made the space feel enclosed and reduced natural light. To address this, a polycarbonate retractable roofing system was selected. The material allows ample daylight to pass through, keeping the area bright and inviting, while offering reliable protection against rain and heat.

The retractable mechanism adds flexibility to the space, enabling the roof to be opened whenever ventilation or an open sky experience is desired. The system operates smoothly and integrates seamlessly with the architectural design of the residence. Additionally, the polycarbonate surface is low maintenance and can be easily cleaned, ensuring long term performance with minimal upkeep. The end result is a functional, all weather courtyard that enhances both usability and overall living experience.
